Denman Island Baroque Music Workshop & Festival
The 2019 Workshop & Festival featured The Fairy Queen by Henry Purcell complete with costumes, parts of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (the background for Purcell’s music), dancing and many fairies. We had a large orchestra playing in period style and magnificently directed by Marco Vitale. We would like to thank all participants, the audiences, the financial donors, and the many volunteers who made this such a memorable event possible.
A mini-festival took place in the Denman Island Community Hall in October 2021. Marco, Romeo Ciuffa (winds tutor), and our new strings tutor Paul Luchkow led a performance of a chamber version of selections from Les Indes Galantes by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). The instrumentalists also performed two further concerts to provide rare, live entertainment for the Denman community in these COVID pandemic times.
We are pleased to announce that we have set dates of May 8-14, 2022 for a full workshop and festival in the Denman Island Community Hall. The main work for the week-long workshop will be Venus and Adonis by John Blow (1649-1708). This is from 1683, the earliest surviving opera in the English language. The festival will end on the afternoon of May 14 with a performance of this charming work. More details to follow soon.
