Denman Baroque Workshop & Festival

Lully: La Grotte de Versailles and Marais: Alcione prologue & chaconne, April 28 - May 4, 2024

The 2023 Workshop and Festival featuring the Music of Monteverdi was a great success. For this, we thank our wonderful tutors, the many volunteers, the audience, local businesses, and participants who made the event run so well.  A short video about this event is linked below

Our next event will run from April 28 to May 4, 2024 in the Denman Island Community Hall.  On the afternoon of Saturday, May 4, under the direction of Marco Vitale, the workshop participants will perform La Grotte de Versailles by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687), a pastoral or short opera, and the prologue from the opera Alcione by Marin Marais (1656-1728).

Lully, composer, violinist and dancer, was employed in the court of Louis XIV, “The Sun King” from 1653 until his death in 1687. He is considered a master of  French baroque music style. We are to present and perform music in this style for the first time in our festival.

Marais, composer and violist, also worked in the court of Louis XIV, "The Sun King". He was a student of Lully and worked in the Royal Court from 1679 to 1725. Alcione is one of four operas he wrote.

Romeo Ciuffa will tutor a workshop for recorders, and Paul Luchkow will tutor a workshop for strings.  Participants will perform in a Friday evening concert.  We are excited to welcome back the renowned tenor, Marcel Beekman, as voice coach.  He added a lot of spice to our 2023 event and received rave reviews from participating singers. As members of Contrasto Armonico, the tutors and our Music Director, Marco Vitale, will perform during the week.  More details will be announced closer to the date.

Our 2023 event was an artistic success and participants and audience members expressed their pleasure with the music.
